Etymology: Amblyceps:Greek, amblys = soft, darkness + Latin, ceps = head (Ref. 45335); crassioris:Name 'crassioris' from the Latin adjective meaning 'thicker', in reference to the relatively deeper body and deeper caudal peduncle of this species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: deeply forked caudal fin except; absence of centrally projecting hooks on proximal lepidotrichia of median caudal-fin rays; jaws equal in length; dorsal-to-adipose distance 18.8%-28.7% SL; adipose-fin base 21.1%-27.1%; body depth at anus 15.1%-19.5% SL; total vertebrae 38; caudal peduncle 13.0%-18.3% SL; head 11.9%-15.0% SL; absence of a lateral line (Ref. 132442).
