Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335); aravera: Name 'aravera' from a Guaraní word meaning 'flash', in allusion to the long body, pointed head, dominant colouration marking of a black midlateral band, and rapid hunting strategy. A noun in apposition.
