Etymology: Rhodeus: Greek, rhodeos, a,-on = rose (Ref. 45335); tugbae: Name 'tugbae' in honor of Dr. Tugba Kalaycı, the beloved wife of the first author, in recognition of her patience and unwavering support throughout his work.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: a slightly subinferior mouth; a sharp predorsal keel; body strongly compressed laterally; lateral series with 5-8 pored and 26-32 unpored scales; 5-7 scale rows between lateral series and dorsal-fin origin; 3-4 scale rows between lateral series and anal-fin origin; body width at dorsal-fin origin 9-13% SL; and postorbital length 47-66% HL (Ref. 138279).
