Etymology: Leporinus: Latin, lepus, leporis = rabbit (Ref. 45335); lignator: Name 'lignator' from the Latin word meaning 'lumberjack', in allusion to the Portuguese translatation of the type locality name Machado, axe. A noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dark vertical bars encircling the body in adults; 9 branched pelvic-fin rays; 3 unicuspid teeth on the premaxillary and four on the dentary; and 12 scales around the caudal peduncle (Ref. 138117)
