Etymology: Pseudomystus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, mystax = whiskered, used by Belon in 1553 to describe all fishes with whiskers (Ref. 45335); nuchalis: Name 'nuchalis' from the Latin words 'nucha' meaning 'the nape of the neck', in reference to the nuchal concavity of this new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: colour pattern of pale yellow patches on the body; presence of nuchal concavity; snout 55-63% HL; adipose fin more anteriorly positioned relative to the anal fin (adipose-fin origin at vertical through anal-fin origin); presence of pale yellow patches on the body never coalescing to form irregular bands; absence of a supracleithral process; adipose fin with a base 13.2-19.0% SL, whose posterior insertion is separate from the dorsal procurrent caudalfin rays; nuchal
plate with straight or slightly convex margins; head 22.1-24.5% SL; and adipose-fin base 13.2-19.0% SL (Ref. 138063).
