Etymology: Barbatula:Diminutive of Latin barba,-ae = beard (Ref. 45335); ommata:Name 'ommata' from the Greek word 'ómmata', meaning 'eyes', in reference to the diameter of the eyes of the species, which is one of its distinguishing characteristic. A noun in apposition.
The species occurs in the littoral zone of lakes at depths of approximately 1.2 meters, predominantly associated with substrates composed of small pebbles (Ref. 137765).
