Etymology: Profundulus: Latin, profundus = deep (Ref. 45335); hectori: Name 'hectori' in honor of Mexican ichthyologist Hector Espinosa Perez for his contributions to the study and conservation of freshwater fishes in Mexico.

Raios dorsais moles (total) : 11; Raios anais moles: 12. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of a small mesethmoid, crescent-shaped, that does not extend beyond the margin of the vomer; large autopterotic fossa; presence of humeral spot; presence of a set of large black spots on the scales on the sides of the body; set of black spots are equal to or greater than 50% of the diameter of the pupil; scales on the lateral line 30-33; predorsal scales 18-24; origin of the dorsal fin positioned at a vertical line slightly anterior to the origin of the anal fin; neural and hemal spines of the preural centra 2; and lacrimal bone has a lateral extension of round or blunt shape (Ref. 137880).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
This species inhabits streams with a substrate of pebbles, sand, and Sabino roots, and bordered by riparian vegetation consisting of scrubland and herbaceous banks (Ref. 137880).
