Etymology: Trichomycterus: Greek, thrix = hair + Greek, mykter, -eros = nose (Ref. 45335); listruroides: Name 'listruroides' in allusion to the superficial similarity of the new species with species of the catfish genus Listrura Pinna, 1988 (Trichomycteridae: Microcambevinae).

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: pelvic fin and girdle absent; caudal fin margin aligned with the caudal peduncle, forming a spatula-like tail; dorsal 24 or 25 and ventral 20 procurrent caudal-fin rays; vertebrae 40; the dorsal-fin origin at the vertical between the centrum of the 24th vertebra; the anal-fin origin at vertical through the centrum of the 26th or 27th vertebra; and a vermiculate colour pattern on the flank (Ref. 137860).
