Etymology: Protocobitis:Greek, protos = the first + Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); longicostatus:Name 'longicostatus' from the English words 'long' and 'constate', in reference to the longer ribs found in the new species compared to other species within Protocobitis.
背鰭 (合計) : 6 - 7; 臀鰭: 5 - 6. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: long costate; whole body covered by scales except head; 12 branched caudal fins rays; lateral head length 18.5-22.5% of SL; deepest body depth 8.5-13.2% of SL; head width 6.2-6.5% of SL, head height 45.7-49.5% of lateral head length, caudal peduncle height 37.8-58.5% of length (Ref. 137844).
