Etymology: Schindleria: Named for ichthyologist Otto Schindler, 1906-1959 (Prof. Dr. Konrad Schindler, pers. comm Dec. 2017); squirei: Name 'squirei' in honor of Chris Squire (1948-2015), a musician, singer and songwriter who composed the song 'the Fish (Schindleria praematurus)' from the album 'Fragile' of the progressive rock band 'Yes'.

Wervels: 36 - 37. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body slender, elongated and unpigmented in preserved specimen; a species of the long dorsal fin species group with predorsal-fin length 60.2% in SL and preanal-fin length 70.4% in SL; tail distinctly shorter than abdomen, 29.8% of SL; head massive, 48.7% width in head length, with a conmassive, 48.7% width in head length, with a convex dorsal profile; a relatively narrow pectoral-radial plate, 52.4% width of pectoral-radial plate length; 20-21 dorsal-fin rays; 12 anal-fin rays; first anal-fin ray situated opposite the dorsal-fin ray 9-10; teeth on both jaws tiny, conical, densely set; largest specimen 20.9 mm SL (Ref. 130793).
