Etymology: Astyanax: The name of Astyanax, Hector´s son in the Greek mythology (Ref. 45335); leoni: Name 'leoni' in honor of Ing. RNR Oscar Leon Mata, researcher MCNG, Guanare, Venezuela.
Eponymy: Astyanax was the son of Hector in Greek mythology. See Homer’s Iliad for details. The reasoning for its use for a genus of characins is not explained. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: inconspicuous rod-shaped stripe on the caudal peduncle that extends anteriorly on top of a silver lateral stripe; short chevrons that cover up to two scale series above and below the vertex of the chevron; chevrons distributed along the entire length of the body; caudal peduncle spot extending anteriorly to beyond the tip of the dorsal fin (Ref. 137784).
