Etymology: Argyripnus: Greek, argyros = silver + Greek,hypnos = sleep (Ref. 45335); scharpfi: Named for Christopher Scharpf, the author of the ETYFish project (www.etyfish.org).

This species is distinguished by the following characters, and most similar to A. atlanticus, differs in smaller and more numerous maxillary teeth, without a noticeable gap between the last photophore of the lateral row and the first photophore of the ventroanal row, the anus close to the anal-fin origin, and, possibly, some meristic and morphometric characters, for the verification of which additional material is necessary (Ref. 130984).
