Etymology: Photonectes: Greek, photos = light + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335); xenopogon: Name from Greek words 'xenos' for alien and 'pogon' for beard, referring to the barbel structure of the new species which does not resemble those of other members of subgenus Trachinostomias, but distant by other characters P. dinema.

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 18; Anale zachte stralen: 23; Wervels: 59 - 62. This species is distinguished by the following characters: pectoral with one long and strong ray that consists of two tightly connected halves; uniserial praemaxillare dentition; vertebrae 59-60; postorbital organ 1.0% (immature male) or 2.4% (mature male) of SL; the chin barbel is relatively short (4.8% SL for SL 11.0 cm) with terminal bulb not protruding beyond the stem; internal pigmentation and flat non-pigmented asymmetrically bifurcated terminal filament on its tip (Ref. 125186).
