Etymology: Owstonia: Named for Alan Owston (1853‒1915), an amateur naturalist, yachtsman and collector of Asian wildlife, notably fishes from Japan and China; merensis: Nane from combination of "mer", name used by Torres Strait islanders for Murray Island, which is the nearest island to the type locality, and Latin suffix 'ensis' meaning belonging to.
