Etymology: marmorata: The specific name marmorata is used in reference to the marmorated pattern on the nape and between the dorsal saddles and lateral blotches in lieu of the black stripe along the side of the body typical of other members of the Paracanthocobitis zonalternans complex.

Paracanthocobitis marmorata differs from all congeners by combination of the following characters: lateral line incomplete, ending just beyond dorsal-fin insertion; dorsal fin with 9½-10½ branched rays; absence of axillary pelvic lobe; absence of black stripe along side of body; marmorated pattern of dark lines and blotches between irregularly shaped dorsal saddles dark blotches along side of body; teardrop-shaped black spot on upper margin of the base of caudal fin; upper caudal fin with 8 branched rays (Ref. 117351).
