Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; eyreae: Named for Janet V. Eyre; noun in the Latin genitive case.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: cephalic sensory-canal pore system lacking the IT and PITO pores, while the AITO pore is not enlarged or double; lacks the dark spot over the preural centrum area; dorsal/anal-fin formula is 7/7; 16 pectoral-fin rays, some are branched; when alive, the body has many brick-red markings (Ref. 107299).

This species is collected over low-relief reef of dead coral and coral rock rubble (Ref. 107299).
