Etymology: Schistura: Greek, schizein = to divide + Greek, oura = tail; an allusion to forked caudal fins (Ref. 45335); puncticeps: Derived from Latin punctum (dot) and ceps (derivation of caput, head), in reference to the prominent spots on the head. A noun in apposition.

This species differs from all congeners by a combination of the following characters: head dorsally and laterally covered by dark brown dots; 5-8 large brown blotches along lateral midline of the body; head length 20.7-24.9 % SL; caudal peduncle length 12.2-13.4 % SL; eye diameter 4.8-6.6 % SL; and no discernable sexual dimorphism (Ref. 95078).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
