Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); xanthopterum: Derived from the Greek xanthos (yellow) and pteron (fin), meaning yellow fin, in reference to the bright yellow fins of this species.

individuals larger than 3.5 cm SL (vs. dark bars or marks present on the sides of the body in specimens of all sizes in the remaining species of Characidium) (Ref. 76854).
Found mostly in riffles, rocky bed with pebbles and sand deposits (Ref. 76854).
