Anale zachte stralen: 130 - 165. Distinguished from other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: body coloration light brown, with fine black pigment spots distributed over the integument (vs. even coloration or mottled in the remaining members of Apteronotus except for A. mariae). Differs from A. mariae by the lower number of anal-fin rays (130-165 vs. 162-180); and absence of or presence of a single paler band encircling the caudal-fin base (Ref. vs. one or two clear bands) (Ref. 55976).
