Etymology: Parenchelyurus: Greek, Greek, para in the side of + Greek, enchelys, -yos = eel + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Lieutenant A J Hepburn was a naval executive officer who was commanding aboard the US Bureau of Fisheries steamer ‘Albatross’. He had previously joined the ‘Pensacola’ (1904). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Adults occur in the intertidal zone, where they hide beneath rocks (Ref. 637 and 559). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref. 94114). Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters (Ref. 94114).
