Etymology: Squatina: Latin for skate, which angel sharks superficially resemble, presumably tautonymous with Squalus squatina Linnaeus 1758 (no species mentioned) (See ETYFish); armata: Latin for armed with a weapon, referring to heavy thorns on snout and between eyes, large hooked thorns on back, and enlarged thorns on leading edge of pectoral fins (See ETYFish).

Taxonomic Remarks
This species is questionably a synonym of Squatina californica Ayres, 1859 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Jul. 2010: Ref. 84883) following various authors. Please send references, or more studies are needed.
