Etymology: Nandus: 'Nandus' is a Bengali local name, but it lacks a proper reference; ‘nanda’ is a Bengali fish name but probably for a different species (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers).

Duri punggung (Keseluruhan (total)) : 12 - 14; duri punggung lunak (Keseluruhan (total)) : 9 - 11; Duri dubur: 3; Sirip dubur lunak: 5 - 6; vertebrata, bertulang belakang: 24 - 25. Distinguished from all other species of Nandus by its deep dorsal head profile and sharp snout, the presence of 37-42 lateral line scales interrupted at the 24th-27th lateral line scale and the presence of relatively large serrae on the preopercle.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Usually found in swamps and sluggish waters (Ref. 43281).
