Has a series of 9-13 saddles along the back; a series of 9-11 more or less roundish blotches along the sides; lateral blotches usually connected by a dark longitudinal stripe which ends in a roundish black spot in the middle of the caudal-fin base; the stripe apparently faint or inconspicuous in small specimens; dorsal fin plain, hyaline (Ref. 27732).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Inhabits streams and river backwaters with sandy bottoms. Usually found only at the driest time of the year. Feeds primarily on insect larvae, worms and some algae (Ref. 12693).
