Etymology: Onychostoma: Greek, onyx, -ychos = nail + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Dr Johann Gerhard Heinrich Carl Gerlach (1843–1913) was a German physician who lived for part of his life in Hong Kong from where he sent a collection of fishes, including the holotype of this species, to Senckenbergischen Naturforschenden [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Adults live in rapid current of mountain streams.
