Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Distinguished from Betta dimidiata (the only other member of the B. dimidiata group) in having the following combination of characters: iridescent turquoise opercle scales when live ( vs. gold); yellowish-brown body when live (vs. reddish); yellowish fins when live (vs. reddish); rounded caudal fin (vs. lanceolate); more lateral scales (30-32, vs. 29-30); more predorsal scales (20-21, vs. 17-18); deeper caudal peduncle (15.3-17.0% SL, vs. 11.8-14.5) (Ref. 57022).
