Definition of Term

Functional redundancy
(English) A characteristic of species within an ecosystem where certain species contribute in equivalent ways to an ecosystem function such that one species may substitute for another. Note that species that are redundant for one ecosystem function may not be redundant for others. (See also: ecosystem, Ecosystem function)
