Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Max. size:  11.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; depth range 10 - 40 m
Distribution:  Africa: throughout Lake Malawi, including Taiwan Reef, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 15-16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-10. Description: basal head profile straight and almost horizontal (Ref. 40899). Coloration: melanin pattern of 9-12 vertical bars; dark coloration (Ref. 40899). Some preserved males have a bright blaze on the dorsal head surface and a whitish dorsal fin; the vertical-bar pattern on the flanks is only vaguely visible or absent (Ref. 55954).
Biology:  Inhabits rocky coasts of Lake Malawi (Ref. 40899). Feeds on fishes (Ref. 40899).
