Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  6.4 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 2 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Mississippi River basin from Pennsylvania, USA to New Brunswick in Canada, Kansas, and Oklahoma, and from Minnesota and Wisconsin south to Alabama and Louisiana, USA; Calcasieu River in Louisiana, USA to Rio Grande in Texas in USA and Mexico.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Adults occur usually over sand in quiet pools and backwaters of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Spawning occurs over sluggish riffles composed of sand or fine gravel (Ref. 79012). Migratory behaviour is undetermined (Ref. 126106).
