Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  23 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 530 - 945 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: off Portugal and Spain south to Western Sahara. Western Central Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Indo-West Pacific: Indonesia (Ref. 5978).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 18-18. Body elongate and moderately slender. Short, blunt, non-protrusible snout. Barbel has slender stem, flattened, moderately narrow distal tip. Black in color. Barbel black except proximal band, outer edges of flattened wings and distal bulb unpigmented (Ref. 37039).
