Family:  Chimaeridae (Shortnose chimaeras or ratfishes)
Max. size:  54 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 570 - 1470 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Western Sahara and northern Mauritania. Western Atlantic: off Florida, USA (Ref. 4443) and off Suriname (Ref. 13608).
Diagnosis:  Long caudal filament. Shorter dorsal spine, longer pectorals and a wavy lateral line. Dark brownish on head and body, fins much darker (Ref. 6902).
Biology:  Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are encased in horny shells (Ref. 205).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 02 September 2019 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  venomous
