Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Smiliogastrinae
Max. size:  9.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Keiskamma and Buffalo River systems in the Ciskei and eastern Cape Province, South Africa (Ref. 7248).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits pools and riffles of clear rocky streams. Feeds on aquatic and terrestrial insects, chiefly mayfly nymphs, as well as seeds and algae. Breeds in spring and early summer. Has been bred in captivity. Threatened by siltation, invading riparian plants and alien predators such as trout. (Ref. 7248).
